High School Poetry: The Joust

“Slash!” swings the sword, silently by my side.
Dodging and parrying just doesn’t…
“Swoosh!” slides the spear, right by my head.
If he doesn’t stop, I’ll…
“Slam!” sails the club, on the ground at my foot.
Where do they all come from?
What happens now determines my fate.
Life or death, as unhappy as it sounds,
Are the only outcomes.
“Crash!” says my sword, [...]

High School Poetry: Euphoria

I want to go outside today,
But all the dirt has turned to hay.
Instead I walked o’er to the mall,
To ride a nickel pony.
I laughed out loud when faced with chance,
The stinking pony just wouldn’t dance.
Instead I skipped out to the field,
To please the laughter that I feel.
Unfortunately that field was hay,
So I could [...]

High School Poetry: Brave New World

“We are on the horns of an ethical dilemma, and to find the middle way will require all our intelligence and all our good will.” -Aldous Huxley

Brave new world,
I suppose I would call it.
Living today, twice as long as yesterday,
Fearing today, thrice as much before.
Cloning, growing, and just plain fixing,
Could be used [...]

High School Poetry: Death’s Day Off

I understood the value of sticking to a job,
Myself being quite a grave man,
But sometimes one just needs off.
Unfortunately, though, when souls hang around
Instead of dropping like flies, things go wrong.
Whoever dreamed that keeping people around
Could make an icy-hot earth?
Whoever would’ve dreamed that the war would’ve started,
Or that the president would have done that?
Certainly [...]

High School Poetry

I’m cleaning out my junk in preparation for a move into an apartment with a girl. Tonight, whilst cleaning out a draw, I came across some random high school papers. One of them was a packet of poetry I had to write in AP English. It made me chuckle to re-read them, [...]

There is a new documentary through HBO about the Ted Haggard scandal that broke a few years ago. His former church has lifted his gag on talking about the events that went down and this article has some information from him about the upcoming movie. There is one line from him that is [...]

There are now more slaves on the planet than at any time in human history. True abolition will elude us until we admit the massive scope of the problem, attack it in all its forms, and empower slaves to help free themselves.

From here.

The NY Times: The Torture Report

The Torture Report, an editorial from the NY Times on December 17th mentions that a bipartisan Senate Armed Services Committee has laid out evidence for bringing criminal charges to top ranking current/former Bush administration officials. Specifically, the report:

said these top officials, charged with defending the Constitution and America’s standing in the world, methodically introduced interrogation [...]

Political Thoughts for Those Inclined to Read Such Things…

Originally published on Facebook and http://www.breakingsilence.org during the previous months outage…
Election day is quickly approaching and everyone wants to know who everyone else is voting for. But most people don’t really want to know who you are going to vote for — instead most seem to have preconceived notions about you and the boxes [...]

Mary’s Song of Praise

Originally published during the unfortunate blog outage of 2008.
I recently started re-reading Luke. Right from the start it hones in on the mission of Jesus in the world; it’s quite refreshing to read. Here, Mary responds to her pregnancy:
And Mary said, “My soul exalts the Lord, and my spirit has begun to rejoice [...]
